The activists of the Islami Chhatra Shibir were thwarted by the police from resorting to violence during their general strike in the Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions.
Wednesday’s strike in the two divisions was called to protest against the detention of Shibir President Delwar Hussen.Suppoters of the Jamaat-e-Islami and its student front, Islami Chhatra Shibir, as run wild since last November demanding dissolution of the International Crimes Tribunals where several of the party’s top leaders are standing trials on a raft of war crimes charges.
Shibir is known for the severity of its violence and brutalities against political opponents like dismembering their tendons.
The police had been on high alert after facing attacks at the hands of Shibir activists across Bangladesh recently.
Police cordoned off the Shibir office in Rangpur city since morning.
Disappointment was apparent in the voice of Shibir’s metropolitan president Moshtaq Ahmed.
“The police are not letting our activists get to the streets,” said Ahmed, also the party’s central committee member.
Rangpur’s Superintendent of Police Abdur Razzaq said three mobile courts, led by executive magistrates, were on the streets. A large number of police and RAB officials were also active.
Apart from them, mobile courts, led by executive officers are on the streets of the seven Upazilas.
SP Razzaq said they had detained 12 Shibir activists from the city’s Medical More, Shapla Chattar and Modern More areas when they tried to organise picketing.
Despite all precautions, strikers torched a goods truck on the Rangpur-Bogra Highway in Mithapukur Upazila.
Small vehicles were seen plying on the city streets but long distance buses remained grounded. Despite organised attacks on the country’s railway sector by suspected Jamaat, Shibir supporters, train services remained unaffected.
On Tuesday, ‘strikers’ had removed fishplates of a rail track in Comilla. The sabotage led to the derailment of the Chittagong-bound Turna Nishitha. Rail communications between the Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet remained suspended for nearly 15 hours and at least 20 passangers were injured.
The on-going HSC and Alim examinations have been kept out of the purview of the strike. Public and private offices and businesses were seen operating normally unlike during previous strikes.
Shibir activists failed to dominate the streets in Rajshahi thanks to heavy police patrol. The law keepers had detained 28 Shibir activists with arms and bombs from a mess facility run by Shibir in the city.
Despite the arrests, Shibir activists fought pitched battles with the police in Binodpur Bazar beside the Rajshahi University on Wednesday morning.
Officer in-Charge of Motihaar Police Station Asit Kumar Ghosh said the Shibir activists tried to block the Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway with burning tyres around noon. They pelted police with brickbats when the law keepers tried to intervene.
Police lobbed several rounds of teargas shells to bring the situation under control.
Witnesses said Shibir activists exploded several bombs during the clashes.
Shibir’s Rajshahi University unit Publicity Secretary Mohsinul Alam Saimum claimed three of their activists had received bullet wounds during the clashes. He said the injured had been hospitalised.
Earlier in the day, Shibir activists tried to block streets at the city’s Hadir More and Kharkhari Bypass More.
They ran away when police intervened.

Police chased them away by firing in the air. Officer in-Charge of Pabna Sadar Police Kazi Haniful Islam said they had detained a Shibir activist, Abdul Wadud, from the spot.
Chapainawabganj Correspondent said Shibir brought out processions in the Razarampur and Mohananda Bridge areas. They also exploded several crude bombs in Rehaichar.
They have set fire to a truck in Sirajganj’s Kamarkhand, our correspondent there said.
Bangabandhu Bridge Paschimparh Model Police ASI Al Mamun said the torching took place at around 11am.
Picketers also vandalised two motorcycles and a private car at Ullaparha in the morning.

They also tried to block the highway in Chhilimpur in the district. They hurled several crude bombs as police tried to intervene.
