Attacks on ruling Awami League’s anti-shutdown procession by supporters of the Jamaat-e-Islami and Hifazat-e Islam on Thursday left at least three people dead in Chittagong’s Fatikchhari Upazila.
She, however, could not identify the deceased.

The Islami Chhatra Shibir, Jamaat’s student front, had called the shutdown for Thursday demanding release of their President Delwar Hussen.

Protesting the shutdown, the Fatikchharhi unit of Awami League took out the procession, led by its leader ATM Peyarul Islam, from Azadi Bazar in the Upazila.

Witnesses said the procession was attacked near Kazir Haat under Bhujpur Police Station at around 1:30pm following a call made on the loudspeakers of a mosque in the area.

Police said at least 15 motorcycles and two jeeps were set ablaze and 50 people injured in the attacks.

Among the injured, 29 were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for treatment.

CMCH Police Camp Constable Pankaj Barua told bdnews24.com Faruk Iqbal Bipul, 40, one of the injured, died from the injuries there.

Three firefighters were also attacked as they tried to extinguish the fire of the vehicles, and a fire service vehicle was vandalised by the attackers.

When the procession neared Bhujpur, an announcement was made from the loudspeakers of Kazir Haat’s ‘Boro Madrassa’ mosque saying criminals were approaching to attack the madrasa, ASP AFM Nizam Uddin of Hathazari circle said quoting witnesses.

Students of the madrasa and local Jamaat supporters began hurling brickbats at the procession and attacked them with bamboo sticks and sharp weapons.

Nizam Uddin said several law enforcers including himself were injured.

Fatikchcharhi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mejbah Uddin told bdnews24.com that they had to fire rubber bullets to quell violence.

He said the situation became normal in the afternoon.

UNO Majlish said the Section 144 had been imposed in the area and BGB personnel, along with other law enforcers, deployed there.
