HC summons plaza owner, RMG top brass

1 / 1
The High Court on Thursday summoned Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana, and the chairmen, managing directors and the chief executives of the five garment units housed in the collapsed high-rise building in Savar.

Savar Police Station Officer in-Charge has been asked to produce them before the court on Apr 30 at 10:00am, while the Dhaka Superintendent of Police would ensure execution of the High Court order.

Bench of justices Mirza Hussain Haider and Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar, acting on a petition of Dr Kamal Hossain, issued the summons.

On Wednesday, the nine-storied Rana Plaza, adjacent to the Savar bus stand and owned by ruling Awami League-backed Juba League Senior Joint Convenor Sohel Rana, collapsed which left at least 187 dead, according to the official count until Wednesday afternoon (2:00pm). Over a thousand were reported injured and as many missing.

Nearly 3,500 workers were employed at those factories.

There were five factories up to the sixth floor of the building. Allegations rose that the workers were forced in to work despite surfacing of cracks a day before.

Dr Kamal Hossain produced several media reports as he moved the High Court on Thursday morning.

A Supreme Court lawyer Yunus Ali Akand filed a similar petition the same day. It is awaiting hearing at the bench of justices Naima Haider and Zafar Ahmed.

Of the five factories, Mahbubur Rahman Tapas and Bazlus Samad Adnan are the owners of New Wave Bottoms and New Wave Styles, respectively.

Mohammad Aminul Islam owned two factories - Phantom Apparels and Track, while EtherTex was owned by Mohammad Anisur Rahman.
