BUET student’s assailant arrested

Police have arrested one person over hacking Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Arif Raihan Dip.

Arrested Mejbah Uddin, 24, a fourth-year student of BUET’s Civil Engineering Department, was produced in a press conference at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media Centre on Thursday afternoon.

Mejbah is an inmate of MS Rashid Hall and hails from Chandpur’s Motlab.
Detective police nabbed him from the BUET campus on Wednesday, Detective Police Deputy Commissioner Jahangir Hossain said at the press conference.

“Mejbah fled to Naria of Shariatpur after hacking Arif with a sharp weapon near Room No. 112 of Nazrul Islam Hall,” he said.

“We got information that he was returning to campus. We nabbed him around 5:00pm. Mesbah has confessed to have committed the crime.”

Mesbah said, “Arif had assaulted an Imam who helped Hifazat-e Islam during its long march to Dhaka. That is why it was my ‘Imani’ right to punish him.”

“I am a follower of Mufti Mawlana Abu Sayeed in Faridabad. Two or three years ago, he told me that it was a Muslim’s Imani duty to protest if anybody hurts Islam.”

Later, Mesbah was taken to court.

Third-year Mechanical Engineering student and Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Dip was hacked in his hall on Apr 9.
