60-hour Shibir strike on

Sporadic picketing and processions marked the start of the Islami Chhatra Shibir-sponsored 60-hour strike that began from Monday in Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj.
The Shibir is demanding the whereabouts of their district office secretary.

Road blockades were attempted in both districts while a few blasts were reported from Chapainawabganj.

Rajshahi

Shibir supporters tried to block roads with burning logs and tyres in Kashiadanga and Nawdapara areas in the morning, Metropolitan Detective Police OC Alamgir Hossain told bdnews24.com. However, they fled when police arrived.

Road blockades were also attempted in the city’s Kapashia road, witnesses said.

Shops in Rajshahi’s Shaheb Bazar and New Market were seen closed.

Inter-district buses were fewer in number, but rickshaws and auto-rickshaws were out in the city.

Chapainawabganj

Shibir supporters brought out processions in several areas of the district. Police said they did not receive news of any major violence.

They blocked Chapainawabganj-Sonamasjid road in Mahananda Bridge, Shibtala areas and the Chapainawabganj-Rajshahi highway at Rajarampur in the morning with burning tyres, bdnews24.com Chapainawabganj Correspondent reported.

Some explosions were reported from Chapainawabganj town, witnesses said.

Long route buses were grounded, but lighter vehicles were seen in the town. Trains were running normally. Shops and establishments were seen closed in the morning.

Police were deployed at all key points to avoid trouble, Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station Inspector Sayeed Iqbal said.

Rajshahi metropolitan Shibir Publicity Secretary Mostafuzur Rahman said in a statement on Sunday that Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) ‘took away’ their Office Secretary Anwarul Islam late on Apr 4 night. He has been missing since then.

However, RAB and police said they had no information on Mostafiz.
