BGMEA suspends 5 factories

Bowing to the demand of the labour organisations, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has suspended membership of the five readymade garment units operating inside the Rana Plaza in Savar.

The nine-storey commercial building came crushing down on Wednesday claiming at least 216 lives and trapping nearly 1500 people.

BGMEA Vice-President SM Mannan Kochi told bdnews24.com the decision was taken during a meeting between BGMEA, BKMEA and BTMA and leaders of 32 organisations of garments owners.

He said the factories would not be provided with Utilisation Declaration (UD) for now.

Allegations were also raised about workers being forced to work in those factories inside the building, despite cracks in the building being noticed on Tuesday.

Of the five factories, Mahbubur Rahman Tapas and Bazlus Samad Adnan are the owners of New Wave Bottoms and New Wave Styles, respectively.

Mohammad Aminul Islam owned two factories - Phantom Apparels and Track, while EtherTex is owned by Mohammad Anisur Rahman.
