Faster Dhaka-N’ganj trains from Apr 24

New and comparatively faster trains known as DEMU trains will start to operate from Dhaka to Narayanganj at the end of this month.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will launch these Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) trains on Apr 24, Railway Minister Mujibul Haque told reporters on Tuesday
“Eight of these ultramodern trains made in China have already arrived. The remaining 12 will get here in June”, said the minister.

The trains will operate on the Dhaka-Narayanganj route primarily but there are plans to use them for the Dhaka-Joydevpur route and also Dhaka-Chittagong route.

The minister expressed hope about operating these modern trains across the country.

“There will be visible development once these new trains begin to operate”, he said.

Railway officials say DEMU trains have engines on both ends which allow them to travel in both directions. There are 151 seats on its three compartments. Besides that, it has the facility to carry 149 standing passengers.

The DEMU trains travel up to 80 kilometres per hour. They usually carry passengers on short routes.

About 38 projects have been initiated in the last four years for the railways development worth more than Tk 183 billion, said minister Haque.
