Ashraf slams Satkania AL

Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on Wednesday slammed local party leaders of Chittagong’s Satkania unit for not being able to resist recent attacks on minorities there by Jamaat supporters.
“Administration has weaknesses. But where were you?" Ashraf told a party meeting at Satkania pointing to Awami League's local leaders.

“Awami League is a party of the people. Awami League should never wait for police-BGB.”

After Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee was sentenced for execution on Feb 28, Jamaat went on a nationwide rampage. Hindu minorities in Satkania and Banshkhali of Chittagong were attacked.

Syed Ashraful Islam visited the affected areas and reassured minorities there.

He directed party activists to play an active role for maintaining communal harmony in the Satkania Upazila Parishad meeting.

Earlier, he visited an affected temple and talked to Hindu residents there.

Ashraf expressed disbelief that anyone could launch an attack of the kind Satkania has witnessed.

On his way to Satkania from Chittagong, Ashraf addressed a road-rally in Banshkhali’s Chandpur Bazar. “Action will be taken against those involved in the attacks,” he said.

Hindu temples, houses and business establishments were attacked from Feb 28 to Mar 4 in several areas of Banshkhali and Satkania. Police blamed Jamaat for the attacks.

One Hindu elder Hari Shil of Shilkupa village was hacked to death during the attacks.
