Nakao new ADB President


Takehiko Nakao was unanimously elected as the ninth President of the Manila-based Asian Development Bank (ADB) by the bank's board of governors. He will take charge on April 28.

The announcement was made in a press release by ADB on Friday.

The 57-year-old Japanese will succeed Haruhiko Kuroda - who resigned in March. He is said to have extensive experience in international finance and development with vast knowledge of the Asian region.

The ADB board of governors look forward to work with Nakao and the institution would benefit immensely by his strong leadership, Chairman of the ADB’s board of governors and Finance Minister of India P Chidambaram said.

"His experience will serve ADB well in pursuing its vision of a poverty free Asia-Pacific region," he said.

Prior to his new assignment, Nakao held senior positions in the Ministry of Finance of Japan and served as Visiting Professor at the University of Tokyo during his more than three-decade long career, the press release said.

Born in 1956, Mr. Nakao hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Tokyo and a Masters on Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley.
