Garment workers on warpath

Angry ready-made garment workers hit the streets in the capital on Friday protesting against the Savar tragedy and demanding arrest of the owners of Rana Plaza and the five garment units based in the collapsed building.
Traffic in the capital’s thoroughfares was disrupted as the protestors turned violent, police said.

The Workers were protesting at Pallabi, Mirpur-1, Mirpur-10, Mirpur-11, Mirpur-14, Shyamoli, Kalyanpur, College Gate, Gabtoli, Tejgaon industrial area, Kawran Bazar, Mohakhali, Gulshan, Rampura Badda and Malibagh areas, bdnews24.com Correspondents reported.

More than hundred vehicles were damaged by the agitating mobs.

The workers of several garment factories started agitating in Mirpur’s Pallabi and Mirpur-11 from around 9:00am, Pallabi Police Station Officer in-Charge Abdul Laltif said.

They were chanting slogans demanding capital punishment for owners of Rana Plaza, Sohel Rana and five garment units, he said.

Several RMG units at Mirpur were closed due to the agitation.

The protests intensified further as more workers joined in the Mirpur area, bdnews24.com Correspondent reported. Traffic through the road from Agargaon to Rokeya Sarani came to a standstill for some time.

Similar protests were on at Savar, Gazipur and Ashulia areas. Most factories in those areas too were shut down for the day.

On Wednesday morning, the nine-storied Rana Plaza near the Savar bus stand collapsed. The official death toll was 292 till 2pm on Friday. Around two thousand people were reportedly injured and many more are missing. More than 3,000 workers were employed in the five garment units housed in the building.

On Thursday, RMG workers laid siege to the building of the apparel exporters’ association, BGMEA before being chased away by police.

One Suman Kaisar, a worker of ‘Rini and Shelly’ garments located near Mirpur’s Purabi cinema hall, said workers of his factory hit the streets soon after their shift began this morning. “Authorities of the factory declared holiday fearing chaos.”

Police tried to disperse them, witnesses said. The workers pelted stones and damaged several garment units before dispersing.

Several factories including a 22-storied building of Standard Group in Kalshi area and Rini and Shelly, Shiha Design in Purabi area were ransacked when police tried to chase away the agitators, bdnews24.com ‘s Chief Sub Editor Ehsan Lenin, who was at the spot, said.

Workers of RMG units at Mirpur-1 hit streets around 10:30am, bdnews24.com Correspondent reported. Some vehicles were damaged. This stalled traffic on Mirpur Road for some time.

Meanwhile, workers of Rampura, Gulshan and Badda areas came out on the streets around 10:00am, Rampura Police Station Officer in-Charge Delwar Hossain Khan said. They were chanting slogans demanding closure of all factories. “They damaged 15 vehicles in Rampura.”

Wielding sticks agitating workers took out a procession at Mohakhali area around 12:00 noon, bdnews24.com desk witnessed. They tried to damage nearby shops in the area.

They were thronging near BGMEA building in Kawran Bazar, witnesses said.

bdnews24.com Correspondent Ashikh Hossain said the protesters at Shyamoli area damaged more than 50 vehicles at around 12pm.

He said some passengers were also injured when protestors hurled bricks at the vehicles.

A vehicle used by the Parliament Secretariat also came under the attack. Police were inactive to tackle the situation.

Witnesses said some vehicles were also smashed near the College Gate area.

bdnews24.com Senior Correspondent Lition Haider said the traffic towards Gabtoli on the Mirpur Road came to a halt after the workers of Creative Garments came out on the streets in front of Ibn Sina Hospital at Kalyanpur.

He said the workers at one stage turned violent and started damaging vehicles.

Meanwhile, four workers and a Sub-Inspector of Police were injured when a private car hit them while trying to avoid a possible attack by the protesters near Gulshan area around 9 am
