BNP condemns Mahmudur’s arrest

Main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Thursday criticised the arrest of daily Amar Desh Acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman, saying it was a clear intimidation in freedom of expression.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Advisor Shamsuzzaman Dudu made the comment at the BNP headquarters in Dhaka in an instant reaction to the arrest made hours earlier in the morning.

Mahmudur Rahman was arrested in a raid on Amar Desh office around 9:00am and was immediately taken to Detective Branch headquarters in Minto Road. He is said to have been arrested on various charges including of alleged cybercrime involving the Skype controversy over International Crimes Tribunal-1.

“Mahmudur Rahman, the brave fighter of free thoughts and expression, has secretly been arrested. The government has insulted the memory of 1971 martyrs in the manner of this arrest because those fighters had fought for freedom of expression,” Dudu alleged.
