Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday warned Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia that she will have to take responsibility for the violence orchestrated by the opposition.
“You (Khaleda) can’t get away with killing people, policemen and innocent drivers... You have to take the responsibility for the murders. The BNP-Jamaat alliance will have to bear the responsibility for all the misdeeds,” Hasina told a party rally at the Town Hall ground in Comilla.
She reiterated her government’s firm resolve to try the war criminals of 1971 and said, “No matter what you do, you will never succeed in saving those war criminals.”
She said the trial (of the war criminals) had started, verdicts were being delivered and it (the trial) would end on the very soil of Bangladesh.
”Your husband Ziaur Rahman could not save the killers by sending them abroad with new jobs…you will not be able to save war criminals either.”
In this regard, she said, “Killings are the handiwork of the BNP and the Jamaat. In the name of strikes, they are attacking innocent people, destroying their sources of bread earning and killing by pouring petrol and burning them.”
She also condemned the Jamaat-e-Islami and the Hifazat-e Islam for attacking an Awami League procession in Chittagong’s Fatikchharhi on Apr 11 calling the attack ‘barbaric’. “And now they are threatening that this kind of incidents will happen again across the country.”
Hasina, President of the ruling party, asked her party leaders and activists to resist the violent activities of the BNP-Jamaat.
She also criticised the opposition for enforcing a series of general strikes amid SSC and HSC examinations.
During her speech, the Prime Minister also mentioned her government’s efforts for the development of the country.
In the morning, she inaugurated the digging of a gas well and a one-kilometre interlinked pipeline for gas transmission at Sreekail gas field in Comilla’s Muradnagar upazilla.
She also inaugurated the Nazrul Institute building and Comilla Shilpakala Academy later in the day.
