Mancha vows physical resistance to communal forces

1 / 1
Shahbagh’s Ganajagaran Mancha will resist the ‘communal forces’ in Bangladesh, if necessary physically, its spokesman Imran H Sarker said on Tuesday after completion of their stick-brandishing procession in Dhaka.

The procession was organised to protest against Hifazat-e-Islam’s alleged attempt to carry out attacks on the Shahbagh protesters and assault on women scribe. Some thousands participated in the march brandishing sticks through the streets of the capital.

The procession began from what is now popularly known as ‘Prajanma Chattar’ at around 5:00pm. It ended at the same place after passing by Matsha Bhaban-Press Club-High Court-Doyel Chattar and the Bangla Academy..

Women were seen leading the procession. Hifazat are known to be in favour confining the women inside their houses.

Hifazat-e-Islam activists assaulted ETV journalist Nadia Sharmin during their Saturday rally in Motijheel. Several other scribes were also attacked.

Earlier on Friday, four Ekattor Television scribes were attacked in Chittagong. Hifazat activists harassed women scribe Sumi Khan in Chittagong on the same day.

At the end of the procession, Imran H Sarker thanked all for their participation. “From the beginning we have conducted our movement peacefully. We have displayed enough patience.”

But, in the face of further instigations, Ganajagaran Mancha will rise to the occasion wielding sticks, he said. “We will not sit at home. If need be, we will resist communal forces with sticks.”

Islamists under the banner of Hifazat-e-Islam dubbed Ganajagaran Mancha protesters as ‘atheists’ and attempted an attack on them on Saturday.

Sarker alleged that the 13-point demand of Hifazat was unconstitutional. “We want to be clear …. those who want to turn this country into a communal, extremist, terrorist and Taliban country… their plans will never be allowed to succeed.”

“They (Hifazat) want to confine women – partners of national stride – inside homes. Such attempts shall never be allowed to be implemented.”

Meanwhile, Ganajagaran Mancha had announced that they will read out letters to the martyrs – written earlier and floated on balloons during one such programme on Feb 20 – at a programme named ‘Bookpocket Chithi’ on Wednesday.
However, Sarker said there will be no separate programme on the occasion of Apr 14 – the Bangla New Year.
“On Apr 14, cultural programmes will take place in Ganajagaran Mancha and in the evening a rally will be held.”
