‘Thwart anti-liberation forces’

1 / 1
Leading citizens of a ‘secular platform’ say they will request the Prime Minister to accelerate the ongoing war crimes trial and ban the ultra-Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami.
At a Nagarik Samaj national council, organised by the Samprodayekota-Jongibad Birodhi Mancha (a platform of anti-communal and militant forces) on Saturday, said they would submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister soon.

Teachers, journalists, writers, rights activists and many other luminaries gathered at the Engineers’ Institute to press for their five-point charter of demands at the second national council of the Nagarik Samaj.

The first council of the organisation was held on Mar 16 in the capital Dhaka demanding death for convicted war criminals and a ban on the Jamaat-e-Islami..

One of the key organisers of the platform, Liberation War Museum trustee Dr Sarwar Ali, read out their demands.

It said the Jamaat and its student front, Islami Chhatra Shibir, were once again challenging the very ethos and spirit of the Liberation War, attacking the religious minorities and raising demands to curb women rights, with an aim to draw a curtain on the ongoing war crimes trial.

They said religious fanatics were trying to take the country back to the dark middle-ages. “The main opposition party (BNP) has joined hands with these forces,” the platform alleged.

Little-known Hifazat-e Islam held a rally in the capital to press for its 13-point charter of demands, which included a ban on public mixing of sexes and scrapping the women’s policy. The BNP supported their demands.

“In this moment of crisis, we need a national unity infused with the spirit of the Liberation War to thwart the negative forces,” Sarwar Ali said.

He urged everyone to come forward to join their efforts.

The platform lauded the Shahbagh demonstrators saying they had held the spirit of the Liberation War up through peaceful demonstrations.

Presided over by Prof Anisuzzaman, the programme was attended among others by, human rights activist Sultana Kamal, Prof Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, Chhayanaut Presiden Sanjida Khatun, Dhaka University VC AAMS Arefin Siddiqui, cultural activist Kamal Lohani, Rana Dasgupta, Prof Zafar Iqbal, Susanta Kumar Das, Shahdin Malik, Prof Ajoy Roy, MA Akash, Abed Khan, Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu, Ramendu Majumder, Khushi Kabir, Syed Shamsul Haque, and Ganajagaran Mancha spokesperson Imran H Sarker.

Muhammad A Arafat moderated the programme.

The call to fight the anti-liberation forces was given from the national council of ‘Nagarik Samaj’, organised by ‘Samprodayekota-Jongibad Birodhi Mancha’ (a platform of anti-communal and militant forces) on Saturday in the capital Dhaka.
