At least 50 people were injured when Hifazat-e-Islam supporters clashed with the activists of the ruling Awami League in Mymensingh during the daylong nationwide shutdown called by the radical group on Monday.
The clashes in Ganginapar traffic intersection started at around 10:45am and lasted for over an hour, police said.
Hifazat supporters gathered and staged a rally in the city’s traffic intersection area at around 9:30am, witnesses said. They left the area in a procession at around 10:30am.
Soon after, Awami League men occupied the area.
At one point another Hifazat procession arrived at the site and clashes erupted as they headed towards the intersection.
Police fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas shells to bring the situation under control, Gazipur Kotwali Model Police Station Officer in-Charge Fazlul Karim said.
