The opposition alliance called a 36-hour shutdown beginning on Tuesday morning in protest against the jailing of eight top BNP leaders to jail.

BNP’s Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Moudud Ahmed were among those sent to jail following their surrender before Dhaka courts in seven cases filed by the police.

Secondary School Certificate exams of 37 subjects were deferred due to strikes enforced by the BNP and its close ally Jamaat-e Islam.
