Shibir strike on Thursday

Islami Chhatra Shibir has called a nationwide whole-day general strike on Thursday demanding release of its President Delwar Hussen.
The Jamaat-e-Islami student front is also opposed to sending Delwar Hussen on police remand for questioning.

Police detained Hussen on Mar 31 from Dhaka. Next day, a court granted 14-days remand to police for questioning him.

Shibir had enforced a shutdown protesting his detention on April 2.

In a media statement issued on Tuesday the group’s Secretary General Abdul Jabbar alleged police was 'torturing' Hussen at an undisclosed location.

He also accused the law keepers of ‘harassing’ Hussen’s family.

Jabbar claimed their shutdown would be ‘peaceful’ but warned of dire consequences if the government tried to stop them from enforcing the strike.

The Shibir have been attacking police across Bangladesh. Their supporters ran wild following the death sentence of its leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee on war crimes charges on Feb 28.

The carried out systematic sabotage on the country’s railways by setting fire to train carraiges, uprooting rail tracks, removing them and even setting them on fire.
