Govt called shutdown: Khaleda

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has alleged the Awami League-led government is scheming and throwing programmes such as general strike to thwart the Hifazat-e Islam’s programme.
Addressing a rally at Koloroa High School ground in Satkhira’on Thursday noon, she said, “Hifazat-e Islam has said their programme will be peaceful. But the government is trying to create unrest in the country by announcing different programmes including strikes in order to foil their peaceful programme.”

If there were any unrest, the government would be held responsible, she warned.

Hifazat, a radical Jamaat-e-Islami-backe
d group based in Chittagong, announced a rally in the capital on Apr 6 after marching from Chittagong demanding justice against ‘atheists and blasphemous bloggers’ of the Shahbagh’s Ganajagaran Mancha.

Meanwhile, 25 organisations, including the Sector Commanders Forum and the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, on Wednesday called a 24-hour nationwide shutdown starting at 6pm on Friday to resist Hifazat’s long march towards Dhaka and press for ban on the Jamaat.

The opposition chief reached Kolaroa from Jessore on Thursday and immediately met the families of the four victims who died in police action on Mar 2. She provided monetary help to the bereaved.

This is the first time Khaleda went to Satkhira after the ninth parliamentary elections in 2008.

She spoke about different issues including the government’s ‘failure’, corruption, submissive foreign policy’, political situation, crisis, next general elections and Hifazat’s long march.

Regarding Hifazat’s march, she said, “Their programme is being obstructed. Our sentiments are hurt as Muslims if anybody says something about Prophet Mohammad. Hifazat-e Islam has already said that the bloggers who insulted the Prophet must be stopped. But the government did nothing.”

“On the other hand, two rallies of the government backed Alem-Ulamas were held. Those were not obstructed. But when Hifazat-e Islam declared programme, those are being hindered.”

Pointing to the ‘Ganajagaran Mancha’ of Shahbagh, the BNP chief said, “Hifazat-e Islam is demanding punishment to those who are insulting the Prophet. But the government is not punishing but patronising them.
