ILO project for decent work to job seekers abroad

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has started labour migration project aimed at maximizing the beneficial impact of labour migration on economic development and improving protection standards for the migration workers from Bangladesh, Officer in Charge of ILO Gagan Rajbhandari said. "The project provides support to the ministry concerned, BMET to strengthen policy, normative and institutional frameworks for better governance of labour migration," he said this at its new office inaugural ceremony at Probashi Kalyan Bhaban in the city. The ILO labour migration project office was jointly inaugurated by Minister of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment (MEWOE) Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, Director- General of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) Martin Dahinden and Ambassador of Embassy of Switzerland in Dhaka Urs Herren by cutting red ribbon. The project titled 'Promoting Decent Work Through Improved Migration Policy and Its Application in Bangladesh' was formally launched on July 5 following approval by the planning ministry. The project started at a cost of US $ 3.5 million project to create suitable jobs and security for Bangladeshi workers abroad. As the chief guest Engineer Mosharraf said the project will help the expatriate Bangladeshis in availing their rights, security and safe employment in foreign countries. "The project is contributing to train overseas job seekers and help secure good jobs abroad. The government has set up 36 training centres and 36 more are under construction across the country to make workers skill," the minister said. He said the government has taken an initiative to reduce migration cost by the talks of Government to Government, adding, "It has proved that Malaysia offered to recruit workers with Taka 40,000 only." The projects works within the framework of ILO's tripartite structure involving the workers, employers and government. It includes the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN WOMEN) and civil society organisations funded by the SDC. The project is expected to conclude in June 2015. Secretary of MEWOE Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan delivered the welcome addressed, while Managing Director of Probashi Kalyan Bank C M Koyes Sami, Hazrat Ali, additional secretary of expatriate' welfare ministry, Director General of Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) Begum Samsun Nahar and the SDC and local agencies concerned attended the function.
