Foreign dignitaries arriving for funeral


The governments of India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Singapore and Malaysia have so far confirmed sending their representatives for the funeral of President Md Zillur Rahman on Friday, says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Malaysia’s Senate President Tansri Abu Zaher, India’s Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah, Sri Lanka’s Senior Minister for Urban Affairs AHM Fowzie, Maldives’ Minister of Islamic Affairs Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, and Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs Zulkifi Masagos will join the funeral, it says.

Faruk Celik, Turkish Minister for Labour and Social Security, will also travel to Dhaka.

The President died on Wednesday at a Singapore hospital.

Irrespective of political background, religion, cast and creed, thousands of people from across the social spectrum thronged the Bangabhaban on Thursday afternoon to pay tributes to the late President.

Bangladesh is observing a three-day mourning.

World leaders also joined the people of Bangladesh to mourn the President and recalled his contribution in the nation’s birth and subsequent building.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in separate messages Indian President and Prime Minister, USA’s Secretary of State, Chinese President, Queen Elizabeth II of UK, Japan’s Chief of Protocol, Canada’s Foreign Minister, Russian President, Singapore’s President and Prime Minister, Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Bhutan’s King and Prime Minister, Nepal’s President, Maldives President and Foreign Minister, Thailand’s King, Iran’s President and Foreign Minister and Pakistan’s President, condoled the death of President Rahman.

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, D-8 Secretary General Seyed Ali Mohammad Mousavi, OIC- Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu and Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma also condoled the death.

The Head of the European Union delegation in Dhaka, Swedish Embassy, Dutch Ambassador to Dhaka and Country Representative of UN Women in Dhaka also expressed their condolence.

Bhutan kept its flag at half mast on Thursday.

The foreign ministry media release says, the 111-member on-going arms treaty meeting presided by the Australian Foreign Minister in New York on Thursday observed two minutes’ silence as a mark of respect.

The governing board meeting of the Global Alliance of Vaccines and Immunisation in Spain accepted a condolence motion in the opening of its meeting on Thursday.
