National Vitamin-A Plus campaign will be conducted tomorrow to feed over 2.10 crore children aged six months to five years vitamin-A Plus to prevent childhood blindness and reduce child mortality in the country.
Under the campaign, nearly 1.67 crore children aged between two and five years will also be given de-worming tablet on the day, Health and Family Welfare Minister Prof Dr AFM Ruhal Haq told a press conference in the conference room of the health ministry here.
State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Capt (retd) Mojibur Rahman Fakir and senior officials of the ministry, among others, were present at the press conference.
On the occasion, a health message on exclusive breastfeeding also will be disseminated among the people to let them know the importance of breast milk for child health.
Health workers and volunteers will feed the vitamin-A Plus and de-worming tablets from 1.20 lakh permanent centres and 20 thousand mobile centres across the country, Ruhal added.
The centres will remain open from 8am to 4pm.
"We can cut 25 percent child mortality from the country through successful implementation of the programmes," Ruhal said.
Blindness problem has been reduced significantly in the country due to feeding vitamin A plus capsules, he said adding in 1982, 3.76 children suffered from blindness for vitamin A deficiency and only 0.04 children now suffer blindness problem.
Vitamin-A deficiency is a serious threat for both mother and child health, other speakers said adding the impact of vitamin-A deficiency is not limited to only blindness. It increases death risk by causing various diseases, they added.
World Health Organization (WHO) recommends feeding de- worming tablets to all children of those countries like Bangladesh, where over 50 percent suffer de-worming problem.
Weight of children decreases, physical growth is hampered and anaemia is also seen among the children, if they have worms.
